But the most famous horse to race the Melbourne Cup was Phar Lap.

Phar Lap died in 1932 and some people believe he was poisoned.
His remains can now be seen in 3 separate museums. His preserved hide is in Melbourne, his skeleton is in New Zealand and his heart is in Canberra.
Makybe Diva is another big name you may know, she’s the only horse to have won three Melbourne Cups! She came first in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
A bronze statue of Makybe Diva has even been erected in her owner’s home town of Port Lincoln in South Australia.
CATHERINE ELLIS, REPORTER: While the first Melbourne cup prize was a gold watch and a few hundred pounds, these days horse racing is big business.
As well as the gold cup, the prize is around $5 million dollars!
Not only that but the offspring of successful horses become very valuable and can be sold for a lot of money!
Makybe Diva gave birth to a colt a few months ago and because there’s soccer cleats size 14 a chance the colt will be as great a soccer cleats size 14 champion as she is, people say it could sell for around $5 million dollars!
