Zach Mejia lead way for area qualifiers
Hypervenom phinish ii a number of area athletes qualified for next Saturday’s CIFSS track and field divisional prelims by winning their respective events or taking second or third while meeting CIF qualifying standards in Del Rio League and Olympic League finals meets Thursday.
Seniors Bailee Henry and Zach Mejia of El Rancho each won two events in impressive fashion and will compete in the Division I prelims at Trabuco Hills High.
Henry won the girls 1,600 meters in 5 minutes, 7.86 seconds and the 3,200 in 11:17.76. Henry entered with the 12thbest time in the division of 5:05.68, set at the Arcadia Invitational in April 5, and the 20thbest time of 11:13.59 in the 3,200 set at the San Gabriel Valley Championships on April 13.
Mejia won the 1,600 in 4:20.12, good enough for 14th in the division this year, and the 800 in 1:58.00.
Krisalyn Levi of Pioneer won the Del Rio League girls 100 in 12.96, but she was the only one to automatically advance hypervenom phinish ii to next week’s prelims. Secondplace finisher Danielle Telles of La Serna was timed in 13:03, but the qualifying time for advancement is 12.74.
It was the same story for the boys. Anthony Jones of Santa Fe won in 11.59, but the qualifying standard is 11.54.
The top three players in the Del Rio League boys long jump advanced. Manuel Perez of La Serna won with a leap of 210 1/2, Malcom McElroy of Santa Fe was second at 207 1/2 and Anthony Figueroa of Whittier was third in 203 1/2. The qualifying standard Advertisement
It was the same deal in the boys triple jump. Figueroa won with a 444 1/2, McElroy was second at 435 and Justin Lopez of Whittier third with a 418. The standard is 410.
All three top finishers qualified in the boys discus, with Andrew Prieto of El Rancho leading the way with a 1423. Christopher Ramos of Santa Fe and Eric Amezquita of Cal High were second and third, respectively, at 1242 1/2 and 1223 1/5.
The girls shot put was fruitful, with three qualifying for next week.
Jocelyne Santillan of La Serna won with a hypervenom phinish ii mark of 3310 1/5, Darling Durant of Whittier was second at 338 and Catherine Borunda of El Rancho took third at 3210.
Anthony Salgato of Whittier won the boys shot with a toss of 483, with Prieto (452) hypervenom phinish ii and Gabriel nike superfly v Batres (447 1/2) of La Serna also making the grade.
In the Olympic League, Whittier Christian’s Eboni Durham qualified for next Saturday’s Division IV prelims at Carpinteria High by finishing second in the girls discus with a mark of 944 1/2.
With a qualifying standard of 2:13.14 needed to make it to the prelims in the boys 800, the Heralds’ Brian Ault was third in 2:12.68. Also making it to next week’s prelims from Whittier Christian were Dylan Murphy and Reid Winans.
