Garcia madness a warning for McIlroy
Mens asics gel kinsei 5 asics tri noosa 10 mens it was horrible to see Garcia, one of the most majestic ballstrikers in golf, so badly humiliated on the greens at Centro Nacional de Golf. Stripped of all confidence, he looked muddled, confused and, at times, utterly clueless about what was happening to him.
Admittedly, the putting surfaces in Madrid became spikedup and bobbly in late afternoon. Yet, no matter how accusingly Garcia looked at the line of each missed putt, the real problem lay elsewhere.
The figures for Sunday’s final round tell a tale of maddening incompetence by a player ranked at No 9 in the world. Garcia sublimely hit 17 greens in regulation that afternoon then twoputted every one of them.
Astonishingly, of the 71 strokes which sent Garcia tumbling into a tie for 17th place in a tournament he’d led at half way, asics tri noosa 10 mens 36 were putts!
Just one player, Alexander Noren of Sweden, performed better than Garcia from tee to green in Madrid but, relatively, few took more putts than the 126 he needed over 72 holes, a souldestroying 69 of them coming at the weekend. It’s the stuff of lunacy.
Make no mistake, Garcia hits the ball as close (if not closer) than anyone else in elite professional golf. Yet his inconsistency at short range with the putter is absolutely mindboggling when compared to the 29yearold’s overall game.
Among the reams of statistics they produce, the US PGA Tour rates players by their success from a variety of distances on the green. Garcia’s ranked 140th on asics tri noosa 10 mens Tour in the percentage of putts he sinks from inside five feet; is 136th when it comes to holingout from five to 10 feet and is a lowly 148th from three to five feet.
More worrying, perhaps, is the Spaniard’s inconsistency from one putt to the next. On Saturday, for example, there appeared to be a multitude of reasons for Garcia’s missed putts compounding his uncertainty and knocking even deeper dents in his confidence.
Few TV analysts are more adept than Sky’s European Tour veterans Wayne ‘Radar’ Riley and Tony Johnstone and it was fascinating to hear their appraisals of Garcia on Saturday.
As Garcia lined up a 10foot putt on eight, for example, Riley advised viewers to note how still the Spaniard held his head through the stroke. Garcia, under pressure to sink this birdie putt after Ross McGowan had holed out from distance for one of his own, duly obliged and Johnstone warned: “watch out for this guy when he’s hitting putts like that,
Yet a few holes later, after Garcia missed mens asics gel kinsei 5 from six feet for par, Johnstone quite rightly chided him for looking for worm casts, spike marks or anything else that might have diverted his ball after it had gone exactly where it had been hit left of the hole. The Spaniard either misread it or had been poorly aligned.
When, once again, Garcia engaged in postputt forensics after pulling a subsequent threefooter wide of the cup, Johnstone suggested: “when he misses a putt, Sergio spends too much time looking for the one of 10 things that could have gone wrong. Instead, he should be off to the next tee. Tiger doesn’t hang around like that. He just moves on,
That’s the nub the matter. No matter how much US putting guru Stan Utley imparts in terms of technique, Garcia’s greatest problem lies between his ears.
The Spaniard’s highly strung nature was revealed seven years ago when he developed a regripping problem in his preshot routine. To his credit, Garcia overcame that difficulty and then regrooved his swing but finding confidence on the greens is a much more complex issue for a man of such vast and painful experience.
A former touring pro, Utley enjoyed a rare appearance in Madrid (despite missing the cut) and now is likely to have 10 days to work with Garcia before the Spaniard’s title defence at the tournament he himself promotes in Castellon next week.
Once again, Garcia will be favourite on home ground. Yet when it comes to sinking highpressure putts at the Majors, the Spaniard’s selfassurance is always likely to be too brittle for him to prevail against merciless finishers like Tiger and our own Padraig Harrington.
These guys were born with an assassin’s touch around the green. Garcia wasn’t soblessed. Neither was McIlroy but Dr Hurrion, the English biomechanics expert who also works with Harrington, believes that through sound method and hard work a good putter can be made.
If anything, McIlroy’s more exciting from tee to green than the mercurial Spaniard. He currently leads the Race to Dubai and the European Tour in stroke average (69.86), despite languishing in 109th place in the putting charts (17 behind Garcia) with 30 asics tri noosa 10 mens putts per round.
So for the past 14 months, McIlroy’s devoted one hour per day not easy for a young lad with so much excitement in his life to repetitive putting routines which Dr Hurrion expects will provide the 20yearold with the feel for a good putt which should stand to him for the rest of his mens asics gel kinsei 5 career.
Inevitably, it has been mindnumbingly tedious but, at this stage of McIlroy’s blossoming career, method is the one sure way he has of avoiding the madness of Sergio Garcia asics tri noosa 10 mens.
